Gin Rummy Stars

Gin Rummy Stars, listed on the stores as Gin Rummy Stars - Card Game, is a free-to-play mobile version of the classic two-player card game Gin Rummy. It is developed and published by Beach Bum Ltd., an Israeli studio based in Ra'anana, and it launched worldwide on January 14, 2020.

Beach Bum was founded in 2015 by a team that included Playtika co-founders Gigi Levy-Weiss and Uri Shahak, with a stated aim of bringing classic board and card games to mobile. The studio built Backgammon - Lord of the Board and Spades Royale before adding Gin Rummy Stars to the portfolio. In October 2021 the French mobile publisher Voodoo acquired Beach Bum in a deal reported at around $300 million, and the studio now operates as Voodoo's Israeli subsidiary while continuing to run its own titles.

The game pairs you against another real person rather than a computer opponent. You are dealt a hand from a standard 52-card deck, and you draw and discard to organise your cards into valid combinations. Everything is played with virtual coins. Those coins buy your seat at a table and are what you win or lose, but they cannot be withdrawn, exchanged for cash or turned into real-world prizes.

Around the card game sits a layer of mobile-game systems that traditional Gin Rummy does not have: experience levels that gate which tables you can sit at, a collectible card Album, a seasonal Game Pass, rotating events, tournaments, daily missions and timed bonuses. Those systems are where most of the free coins in this game actually come from.

If you have played Gin Rummy at a kitchen table, the rules here are the ones you know. A match is made up of several rounds, and it runs until one player passes the winning score for that table. The winner takes the pot of coins both players put up to sit down.

The deal and the turn

Each player is dealt 10 cards face down. One card is turned face up to start the discard pile, and the rest form the face-down stock pile. The non-dealing player decides first whether to take that face-up card or pass; if they pass, the dealer may take it; if both pass, the non-dealer draws from the stock. From there you alternate turns, and each turn is the same shape: draw one card from either pile, then discard one, so you finish every turn holding 10 cards again.

Melds and deadwood

The point of the draws and discards is to build melds. A set is three or four cards of the same rank, such as three sevens. A run is three or more consecutive cards in one suit, such as the five, six and seven of clubs. Aces are always low, so ace-two-three is a run but queen-king-ace is not.

Anything left over that is not part of a meld is your deadwood, and deadwood is what you are scored on. Aces count 1 point, jacks, queens and kings count 10 each, and every other card counts its face value. Cards inside a meld count nothing.

Knocking, Gin and the undercut

Once your deadwood total is 10 points or fewer you can knock, which ends the round. Both hands are then laid out, and your opponent may lay off their own loose cards onto your melds, for instance adding a fourth seven to your set of three. You score the difference between the two deadwood totals. Knock with 6 against an opponent left holding 20 and you take 14 points.

If all 10 of your cards form melds you have Gin, which is worth a 25-point bonus on top of your opponent's deadwood, and no lay-offs are allowed against it. The reverse also exists: if you knock and your opponent turns out to have equal or less deadwood after laying off, they undercut you and take the difference plus a 25-point bonus of their own.

What you actually win

Beach Bum calls the payout structure the stars payout system, and describes it as letting players win more when they reach a higher point gap. In practice that means the size of your win scales with how badly you beat the other player, not just with the fact that you won. It is also why the swings feel large: a decisive round pays well, and a decisive loss costs more than the seat did.

Oklahoma Gin changes one rule in a way worth knowing before you sit down. The first upcard sets the knock threshold for that round, so if a seven is turned up, you can only knock at seven deadwood or fewer. Joker Gin adds jokers as wild cards. Beach Bum does not publish the exact rule changes for the Faceless Gin variant, so check the table description in the app rather than assuming.

Gin Rummy Stars has an unusually long list of free coin sources for a card game, and none of them require you to catch a post at the right moment. The two that matter most are simply timers.

• Daily Bonus: Claimed on your first login each day. The amount grows with your login streak, so the cost of missing a day is not just that day's coins but the streak behind it.
• Free Bonus: A separate claim available every 4 hours, from an icon on the main screen. Claim it before you sit down rather than after you have gone broke.
• Daily Challenges and Stars Rush Missions: Rotating daily objectives that pay coins, and in the case of Stars Rush, accessories as well.
• 3-hour Contests: You are entered automatically. The three players who score the most points inside each three-hour window are paid coins, so ordinary play is already earning here.
• Level-up rewards: Levelling pays coins outright. Experience is earned by playing, and higher-stake tables award more of it per game.
• Referrals: 5,000 coins for each friend who joins on your link, up to 10 friends. A player joining on someone else's code gets 1,000 coins for entering it.
• Facebook Connect: A one-time coin bonus for linking the game to a Facebook account, done from the settings menu.
• Album sets: Completing a set of collectible cards pays a coin prize, with a larger prize for finishing the whole Album.
• Game Pass, free tier: The free track of the seasonal pass pays a prize at every level, unlocked by earning crowns from daily missions.

The Album unlocks at level 8 and the Game Pass at level 17, so a new account will not see either straight away. Beach Bum does not publish the coin amounts attached to any of these, and they vary with your level and streak, so treat any specific figure you read elsewhere as someone's single observation rather than a rate.

Experience points are earned just by playing, and the rate depends on the stakes of the table rather than on whether you win. Levelling up unlocks higher-stake tables, entry to tournaments, and the two meta-systems below. Beach Bum does not publish a level cap.

The Album

The Album is a collection of limited-edition cards, grouped into sets. Cards arrive as rewards from playing, and can also be bought in packs. Completing a set pays coins, and completing every set pays a grand prize. Wild cards fill any gap in a set, and duplicates are not wasted: they fill a star bar that pays out a gift when full, with a gift level that improves the rewards as you open more of them.

Beach Bum does not publish drop rates for card packs, and there is no documented pity timer or duplicate protection. If you are buying packs to finish a set, you are buying into odds nobody outside the studio can see.

The Game Pass

The Game Pass is a seasonal track with a free and a premium tier, available from level 17. You earn crowns by completing daily missions and designated challenges, and each level of the track pays a prize. The premium tier can be activated at any point during a run and unlocks its rewards retroactively, so a player who reaches level 6 free and then buys in collects six premium prizes at once.

Finishing every level on both tiers, and claiming the rewards, opens the Bonus Chest. Crowns keep accumulating after the track is complete, and each further completion adds coins to that chest, which opens on the pass's final day.

Coins are the only currency. There is no separate premium currency, which is unusual for the category and means real money buys coins directly rather than something you then convert.

Purchases run from $0.99 to $99.99, sold as Starter, Mini, Advanced, Pro and Premium packages, with several price points inside the smaller tiers and regional pricing that differs by store. Beach Bum does not publish how many coins any package contains, and the store listings show prices without quantities, so there is no way to compare value between tiers before buying.

Coins are also spent inside the game rather than only at the store: on table entry, on tournament entry, on card packs for the Album, and on activating the premium Game Pass.

The game carries advertising as well. Google Play lists it as containing ads, and there is no documented option to remove them through a purchase.

Any honest write-up of this game has to address it, because it is the single most common thing players say about Gin Rummy Stars. A large and persistent share of reviews allege the game is rigged: that the deal is manipulated to hand opponents improbable hands, that wins come early and losses come in engineered streaks, and that the effect is to push players toward buying coins.

Beach Bum's answer, repeated in developer responses on both stores, is that hands are shuffled and dealt completely at random before each game, and that the studio uses a third party's random number generator to ensure fairness. That is the company's stated position.

What is missing on both sides is evidence. Beach Bum does not name the RNG provider, publish a certification, or allow independent auditing, so the claim cannot be checked. The player allegations are pattern-spotting in a game with genuine variance, and no regulator or court has ruled on the question. One widely shared community post claims a group of testers analysed the game over a month and concluded it was a scam; that is an unverified account, not a finding.

Our position is to report the dispute rather than settle it. What is verifiable is the economics, and the economics explain a lot of what players describe: the payout scales with the point gap, higher tables raise the stakes on both sides, and players consistently report that payouts run below buy-ins over time. A player can lose coins steadily in a perfectly fair game with those properties.

No. The game states plainly that it does not require real money and that there is no opportunity to win real money or prizes. Coins have no cash value, cannot be withdrawn, and cannot be exchanged for anything outside the app.

That said, it sits closer to the line than most card games. The App Store rates it Frequent/Intense Simulated Gambling, and the game restricts itself to users of legal age, meaning 18 or the local legal gambling age. The store listings carry the standard disclaimer that success in the game does not imply success in real-money gambling.

The practical difference from a casino app is that Gin Rummy is a game with real skill in it. Card tracking, choosing which melds to chase, and knowing when to knock rather than draw again all change your results over a long run. The deal is still chance, and no amount of skill overcomes a bad hand, but this is not a slot machine.

There is a promo code system, but it works differently from almost every other game we cover, and this catches people out.

Gin Rummy Stars codes appear to be issued per player rather than published for everyone. A code is meant for a single account to use, which means the community cannot share a working code the way it can for most games. Sites that list codes for other titles say plainly that they cannot provide a list for this one, and that is why.

The practical consequence: a code you find posted publicly has almost certainly already been used by whoever it was issued to, or has expired. Codes are described as available for a limited time only. If you are given one through an official channel, redeem it immediately rather than saving it.

Beach Bum does not document where the redemption field sits in the current build, so if you have a code and cannot find where to enter it, that is worth a support email rather than a hunt through the menus.

Gin Rummy Stars runs on iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple Vision, and needs iOS 14.0 or later. The Android version needs Android 5.0 or higher and supports installation to external storage on devices that allow it. It is also playable on Windows through Google Play's PC integration.

The download runs to roughly 230 to 250 MB on iOS and around 200 MB on Android, varying by version and device.

There is no browser version, and no offline mode. Every match is played against another person on Beach Bum's servers, so the game needs a connection at all times. Play is cross-platform, so an iOS player and an Android player can face each other.

Account linking through Facebook exists and is the sensible thing to set up, though Beach Bum does not clearly document whether progress syncs automatically between an iOS and an Android device. If an account goes missing, support can trace it, which is a further reason to link before you need to.

The game is actively maintained. Version numbering has moved from the 2.x range in 2023 into 3.x by 2025 and 2026, and updates continued through the most recent research. Beach Bum does not publish a detailed changelog; store release notes are generic, so the version history tells you the game is being worked on without telling you what changed.

Events rotate continuously. Recent runs have included Hobbies Album, a card-collection event, and Roll & Rise, a ladder-climbing challenge. Both were live as of the most recent research and neither had a published end date, which is normal for this game.

Player numbers are only partly public. Google Play shows more than 5 million downloads. Beach Bum reported over 2 million monthly active users across its whole portfolio back in 2021, but has never broken out a figure for this title specifically.

Store ratings are high and stable, at 4.9 on Google Play across a quarter of a million reviews and between 4.7 and 4.9 on the App Store depending on region. Those scores sit alongside the fairness complaints described above, which is a genuine split rather than a contradiction: most players enjoy the card game, and a vocal minority distrust the deal.

Gin Rummy Stars sits in the card and board corner of this site rather than among the slots. These are the closest things we cover.
