What Are Star Gems in Bejeweled Blitz? (and How to Make Them)

A Star Gem in Bejeweled Blitz is created by matching 5 gems in an L or T shape. It appears at the bend of the L or the center of the T. When you clear it as part of a match, it destroys every gem in its full row and column at once. That's one of the biggest single-move scoring plays in the game. The Moonstone Rare Gem starts you with 3 pre-placed Star Gems already on the board.

Step 1

What is a Star Gem in Bejeweled Blitz?

A Star Gem is a special gem created during play that sits on the board until you activate it. When you include it in a match of 3 or more gems of its color, it fires off and destroys every gem in its row and every gem in its column at the same time. All cleared gems score normally with your current multiplier applied. Visually it looks like a star-burst shape instead of the normal rounded hex gem, so it's easy to spot once you know what to look for.

Step 2

How do you create a Star Gem in Bejeweled Blitz?

Match exactly 5 gems of the same color in an L shape or a T shape. The L shape is 3 gems in a line with 2 more extending at a 90-degree angle from one end. The T shape is 3 gems in a line with 2 more branching off the middle gem at a right angle. The Star Gem appears at the corner of the L or the center of the T. The important thing to remember: 5 gems in a straight line creates a Hypercube, not a Star Gem. You need that bend in the pattern.

Step 3

How many Star Gems can you create in one game?

There is no cap. You can create as many Star Gems as the board allows. In practice, your gem density and board state determine how often L and T patterns appear. Activating one Star Gem clears a full row and column, which reshuffles the board and can expose new L or T clusters. Top players try to chain 2 or 3 Star Gems per game alongside Flame Gem and Hypercube combos, especially in the first 20 seconds when the board is fresh.

Step 4

What is the difference between a Star Gem, a Flame Gem, and a Hypercube?

Flame Gem: match 4 gems in a row or column, get a Flame Gem that explodes nearby gems in roughly a 3x3 radius when activated. Hypercube: match 5 gems in a straight line, get a flashing cube that destroys every gem of a chosen color on the entire board when you swap it with any gem. Star Gem: match 5 gems in an L or T shape, get a Star Gem that wipes its full row and column when activated. Star Gems are the biggest guaranteed area clear you can build on your own. Hypercubes can beat them when there are many gems of the target color available, but that's board-dependent.

5
Step 5

Which Rare Gem gives you Star Gems at the start of a game?

Moonstone is the Rare Gem that pre-places 3 Star Gems on the board before your round begins. It costs 15,000 coins and is the cheapest standard Rare Gem in the game. Those 3 Star Gems sitting on the board from second one means you can chain big row-and-column clears in the first few moves. Moonstone is widely considered the best value-for-score Rare Gem for casual players because of how much early momentum 3 pre-placed Star Gems can generate.
